L-OERner V1.0 — Terms of Use
L-OERner is an AI-assisted tool designed to support the transformation of openly licensed educational content into structured learning materials. Before using this tool, please read and accept the following terms.
1. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer
All content generated by L-OERner is produced by large language models and is provided for educational purposes only. Generated content is not guaranteed to be accurate, complete, or free from error. Users are solely responsible for reviewing, verifying, and validating all generated outputs before use, publication, or distribution.
2. OER Compliance Disclaimer
L-OERner performs automated Creative Commons license detection and applies attribution metadata to generated outputs. This detection is an automated aid and is not a substitute for independent legal verification. The tool does not guarantee OER compliance of any generated material. Users must independently verify that all generated content complies with the applicable license terms of the original source material before publishing, redistributing, or otherwise using the generated outputs.
3. Model Licensing
L-OERner currently uses the following AI models, each governed by their respective open-weight licenses:
- openai/gpt-oss-20b — Apache 2.0 License

Additional models may be integrated in future versions of L-OERner. All models used by this tool will be governed by open-weight licenses compatible with Apache 2.0 or equivalent open licensing terms. Users acknowledge that the licensing terms of individual models may evolve and agree to review applicable model licenses as new models are introduced.
4. Creative Commons Framework
Generated outputs that are attributed and licensed under Creative Commons terms are subject to the conditions of the applicable Creative Commons license. L-OERner applies license metadata to outputs based on the detected license of the source material. Users acknowledge that:
- ShareAlike (SA) conditions require derivative works to be distributed under the same license as the source.
- NonCommercial (NC) conditions prohibit commercial use of generated outputs.
- NoDerivatives (ND) sources are blocked from generation entirely, as generating derivative works from ND-licensed material is not permitted.
- Attribution (BY) conditions require the original author and source to be credited in all uses of the generated material.

5. No Warranty
L-OERner is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. The developers of L-OERner and affiliated institutions (University of Alberta, RWTH Aachen University) accept no liability for any damages, losses, or legal consequences arising from the use of this tool or its outputs.
6. User Responsibility
By accepting these terms, you confirm that:
- You will independently verify OER compliance before publishing or distributing any generated content.
- You will review the attribution metadata applied to generated outputs and correct any inaccuracies before use.
- You understand that automated license detection may not capture all license information present in a source document.
- You accept full responsibility for any use of generated content.
